The Gunite Process: What to Expect
How Construction Works
Gunite construction is a multi-step swimming pool construction method used for fully custom inground pools. Once excavation is complete, a rebar framework made of steel rebar and steel bars is installed to define the pool shape and reinforce the future pool structure.
A dry concrete mix of sand and cement is delivered through a high pressure hose using pressurized air. This pneumatically applied concrete forms the gunite pool shell as water is added at the nozzle. Unlike traditional poured concrete, this method allows precise placement and compaction at the job site.
As the gunite cures, it hardens into a thick layer of standard concrete that becomes the structural core of the pool.
Gunite vs. Other Pool Materials
Homeowners often compare gunite and shotcrete pools, vinyl liner pools, and fiberglass pools. Both gunite and shotcrete are forms of pneumatically applied concrete, but gunite uses a dry mix combined at application.
Vinyl liner pools rely on a vinyl liner over a frame system. Fiberglass pools arrive pre-molded. A concrete pool built through the gunite process is shaped and reinforced on site, giving pool builders greater flexibility during pool installation.
That structural approach makes gunite a preferred building material for complex designs and long-term stability.
